Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 10, Issue #23 (hello, lucky number!)
May 31, 2006

WAIT...please read below for what happened last week!

SO....what was all that, then? Before you go reaching for the unsub
button, please let us explain why you got those three random messages
about unsubscribing from the list. See, an enthusiastic volunteer tried
to solve a problem on a bunch of other announce lists, and that fix
resulted in the accidental removal of moderator status on ALL the lists,
and three administrator messages making their way to all the subscribers
on *this* announce list before we realized the goof. It was immediately
fixed, and we're extremely sorry for the error. Your email address is
still secure with us and has not been compromised, we swear...and yes,
it's been a while since you heard from the Jack Rabbit. Between our
server switch and some shuffling behind the scenes on the JRS staff,
we've been...well, saving it all up for you today, and it's all right
here, and worth the wait, or so we hope.

Like what, you ask? Well, we're proud to bring you the 2005 Afterburn
Report at http://afterburn.burningman.com. The Afterburn is our annual
soup-to-nuts look at how things went at the last event, and an in-depth
report from all the subteams it takes to make Burning Man a reality. Be
the first on your block to bust out a cite when someone asks you where
all the ticket money goes!

We're also getting up on those deadlines it's time to think about: DMV,
for example. (And don't forget to check http://www.burningman.com to see
what others are upon us: Theme Camps, Art Installations, this means
you!) To get you in the mood, we've included a link to all of this
year's funded art project descriptions, and three more in the series of
BURNcasts, the participant-created podcast about the Burning Man community.

And if you're looking to plug in this year and get more involved with
Black Rock City, check it out: you could train to be a Ranger, sling
coffee or craft for Center Camp, or plug in to one of several
participant projects, greet, enter data, share a truck, help an eager
filmmaker tell the story of Burners Without Borders, or participate in
this weekend's Flambe Lounge...you know? There's just a lot you can do
to get your hands dusty.

Um, Flambe wha...? Yes, that's right, there's just no sleep when you're
on fire. Hot on the heels of the GORGEOUS Fire Arts Exposition last
weekend in San Francisco, Burning Man presents Flambe Lounge this
Saturday at The Pound! See below for details. And there are more fun
events coming up - fundies for the Flaming Lotus Girls, for Thunderdome,
and more...not to mention an expanded Harmony Festival in Sonoma that
should be out of this world, and events in London and elsewhere.

Another reminder: the deadline to get your playa event in the What,
Where, When (we know, some of you have been asking after it!) is coming
up on July 19th... put your item on the Playa Calendar to appear in the
print edition - http://www.burningman.com/calendar/playa/day.php.

And now, on with the show. Stand by next week for info on upcoming
special issues of the JRS for RESOURCES and BIKES...and watch for the
news to get even more regular, because in case you haven't looked at the
calendar lately...? Yeah. 94 days until the burn.

2005 AFTERBURN REPORT LIVE

We're very happy to announce that the 2005 AfterBurn Report is now live:

THANK YOUR FOR YOUR PUBLIC COMMENTS TO THE BLM!

As you know, we issued a Call To Action for our community to tell the
Bureau of Land Management (BLM) that we do not agree with proposed
stipulations that would allow the BLM to charge Burning Man even more
money and also give law enforcement the unfettered discretion to evict
participants from Black Rock City. In less than one week the Burning
Man community rallied by sending at least 2,221 emails and 298 letters
to the BLM voicing disagreement with the proposed stipulations. Rock on!

(The official number of emails and letters was probably even higher, but
we are only able to count the letters and emails where participants also
sent copies to Burning Man headquarters. We'll get the official count
from the BLM in the near future.) Thank you all for the deluge of
wonderful comments and support!

Burning Man and the BLM's officials are continuing to communicate to
resolve outstanding issues. Thanks to your incredible, articulate
support and the support of Pershing County, we are confident that we
will reach a palatable agreement with the BLM very soon. Stay tuned!

APPLY NOW FOR DMV PERMITS - JUNE 30 DEADLINE

The time to apply for Mutant Vehicle and Disable Persons Vehicle permits
is NOW!!!!!!

Hello to all you Mutant Vehicle creators out there. This is just a
reminder to you all that if you wish to bring a Mutant Vehicle to share
with the masses at Burning Man this year, you MUST preregister with the
Department of Mutant Vehicles. And please take note, to leave us enough
time to process your application and get back to everyone before The Man
actually burns, we have moved the deadline to apply up two weeks to JUNE
30th. We think this will work out better for all involved. The DMV has
started to process applications, so now is the time to get them in. The
longer you wait the more build up for us to process and the longer it
takes for us to get back to you. So the sooner the better is the name of
the game.

Also open is the Disabled Persons Vehicle Permit Application, so if you
are in need of special driving privileges, you must also pre apply for this.

Make sure to check the website for information on vehicles and driving
at Black Rock City.

And follow the links to the applications.

PERSONAL USE VIDEO AGREEMENT AND MEDIA AT BURNING MAN

As you might know, if you're bringing any kind of camera to Burning Man
that captures moving imagery you will use for personal use (that is,
showing to friends and family, only) you'll be asked to sign a Personal
Use Agreement in Black Rock City before you are allowed to film. These
agreements are available at the Greeters' station, as well as at Playa
Information and the two Ranger outposts...BUT, you can save some time
and print yours out to bring with you.

Before we give you the link, though, we must point out that our dear
readers should NOT mail this form back to Burning Man. Simply hang onto
it with your tickets and other stuff to have ready when you arrive at
BRC. You can't film until you are handed a tag in exchange for your form
- having it early just gives you a chance to review and sign so when you
get to the Greeters, you're set to go. Got that? OK. The link to the
page with the form:
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/video_cameras.html

AND, if you're with the media and you're trying to register a larger
project, please stand by. We hope in the next few days at
http://www.burningman.com/press. We'll be sure to post to JRS as soon as
it's ready. Thanks for your patience.

GOT KATRINA? PHOTOS AND FOOTAGE FROM HURRICANE RESPONSE ON/OFF PLAYA NEEDED

As many of you know, there was an outpouring of effort from the Burning
Man community to help aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina last year,
one that began on the playa and continued though this spring. Tom
Price, a member of our staff who spent several months with Burners
Without Borders along the Gulf Coast, is working on a short documentary
film about those efforts, and is seeking footage and photos from those
who may have experienced any part of that relief effort.

Tom is looking in particular for photographs and video of the efforts on
the playa--around Media Mecca, in the Cafe, and during Exodus--of people
raising money and supplies to help out....OR, if you have any aerial
footage of BRC 2005, or a good montage of the event on the ground
(Katrina-related, or not) he'd love to see that as well. Caveat: footage
must be delivered ASAP, since the production timeline is short. If you
have some you'd like to volunteer for this project, or images/video from
the disaster zone itself, please contact him directly:
price_tom@hotmail.com

Footage may be sent directly to Tom Price, PO box 4793 Jackson, 83001

2006 RANGER TRAINING

Black Rock Ranger Trainer Splinter Sez:

Greetings current, former and potential future Black Rock Rangers. Our
training season is in full swing. The next training is this weekend at
Flipside!

In order to volunteer your time at Burningman as a Black Rock Ranger you
must have attended the event at least once and you must attend a one day
training session. We have been working hard on the Rangering program and
are working on some changes that may entice some of you former Rangers
back. For more on that, come to a training!!!!

To start the whole process of volunteering as a Black Rock Ranger, go to
the volunteer page on the Burningman web site and fill out the volunteer
questionaire. Be sure to check the "Rangers" box under "Volunteer Team
Interests". Then, go to the Ranger training schedule and pick a training
session in your area. We are looking forward to seeing and meeting all
you Rangers this year.

Bestest,
Splinter

CENSUS: SIT DOWN AND TYPE, THAT OTHERS MAY STAND UP AND BE COUNTED

Calling all laptop cowpoke, midnight web surfers, ethnography junkies
and data entry mavens! The Black Rock City 2005 census team is looking
for a few good geeks. If you've got a computer, an internet connection
and a few hours over the next month, you can be a huge, huge help.

Each year we collect thousands of paper census forms on the playa and
then bring them home to be data entered. This is a great chance for
those of you who don't live in the SF Bay area to get involved in
contributing something to your community! The Black Rock City census is
an important part of the project and touches many aspects of the event
as well as our larger community - from helping in our dealings with
Nevada and federal officials to providing a historical record of who we
are and where we come from.

If you'd like to help, please send an email to census@burningman.com.
One of us will get back to you about mailing forms to you to work on
from home.

Thanks a million.

- The 2005 census team

THEME CAMPs: GET YOUR GREETER ON....TOGETHER

To all Theme Camps: In previous years theme camps have really made
Greeting a true representation of our city. We encourage camps to bring
their sounds and craziness to the Greeters' station and do a shift
together! Remember that the purpose is to be of service to those
arriving home but also to have as much fun as can be had and still
fulfill our mission as Greeters.

This announcement is an alert to get your requests for a shift in NOW!!!
For those camps that have enjoyed greeting in the past and for those
camps that are new to greeting, NOW is the time to check with your
campmates and let us know that your camp is interested in greeting.

We invite you to submit your camps request for a 4 hour shift that you
and your campmates would like to greet. Remember shifts start at 12, 4
and 8. A normal shift is for 20 greeters.

This year we would like an estimate of how many greeters your camp will
be able to provide for the shift. If your camp is very large and could
fill more than one shift let us know and we might be able to find a
second shift for them. If your camp is smaller and could not fill the
full 20 slots, that is not a problem as we will fill the remainder with
individual volunteers.

For information or to submit a shift request, please contact Dragon at
dragonsfire66@aol.com

PROJECT MEGAPIXELS: BIG ART, VISIBLE FROM SPACE! UPDATE - WE NEED YOU!

Sputnik writes: "Project Megapixels continues to chug along. We
recently announced the picture we are hoping to make. To see it click
on the following link:

  http://pics.livejournal.com/sputnik/pic/0002hddk

This project still needs you to bring out pieces of this enormous
puzzle. Right now we have about 1000 pieces spoken for, but we need
5000 to make the complete picture. Each piece is simply a square of
fabric a bit over 3 feet by 3 feet. If you can bring 5 to 10 pieces,
then we can do this with 500 people or so. The project also needs
donations of items we'll need to build and layout the image, things like
lights for the perimeter, a generator, electrical cords, rebar stakes,
30,000 feet of rope, etc.

To get involved, check out our web site at http://projectmegapixels.org
or email Sputnik at dan.eklund at gmail.com

In other good news, we have confirmation that the satellite picture of
BRC will be taken again this year. Probably late in the week, exact day
not known yet.

Thanks and see you on the playa!"

PANTY CAMP WANTS YOU

"We want your panties!

Panty Camp needs your panties!!! Panty Camp is on it's fourth year of
providing the citizens of Black Rock City with clean ladies' undies.
Last year we gave away nearly 100 lbs of panties (that's around 1000
pairs, if you're wondering). We rely on donations to run our camp, and,
once again, we find ourselves running low in our panty supply... so send
us your panties!

But wait, there is something in it for you...

Send us 6 or more panties and we'll send you one back with "The Man",
wearing a pair of panties, of course, printed on the butt!

enlightened and enthused. It will cost you between $100 and $200,
depending on what you're taking. Just think! No schlepping your stuff
to the post office or UPS, no having to pick it up in Reno or someplace
else. All you have to do is find us in Black Rock and get your stuff.
Email me at suzannemccarter@msn.com for further details!!!"

AND A JRS NOTE: Reminder for those of you in Ohio, there are now two
regionals there: northernohio@burningman.com and ohio@burningman.com.

HARMONY FESTIVAL IN SONOMA COUNTY JUNE 9-11

Each year the JRS has shared this festival by neighbors in Sonoma County
- we're told this year the event has expanded to a weekend camping event
and that there will be a Burning Man contingent camping together. The
event has always been of interest to local burners and it has a lot of
great philosophies, so we thought you might enjoy hearing about it too.

UK/EUROBURNERS: "51 WEEKS' BURNING EVENT, JUNE 2
An exploration and celebration of Burner culture beyond Burning Man

#5 entry. June 2nd, 7:30pm, at The Horse Hospital, Colonnade, nr Russell
Square, London WC1N 1HX

Burning Man is famous for attracting 35,000 individuals every year, who
come together to build a city and spend a week in a temporary community
based upon the principles of radical self expression, radical self
reliance, no commodification, and leave no trace. Perhaps more
impressive, however, is the world wide community that has grown around
this event: a community which comes together not only to help and
support each other in the logistically difficult task of preparing to
spend a week in one of the world's most hostile environments, but also
strive to keep the principles of the event alive for the rest of the year.

51 Weeks' Burning is an evening of celebration of this community, and
discussion of why this community exists and what it does. The evening
will include:

     * A photography exhibition by NK Guy and Dave Bradshaw. The photos
will include a series of diptychs comparing London town and Black Rock
City, studio portraits from London Decompression and other pictures from
the event.
     * A film screening
     * A talk by Ashley Satorius on the principles of gifting economies
and the potential for self regeneration in the wider world.
     * "We Are Not At Burning Man", a performance lecture by Tessa
Wills, leading into a discussion on "coming home"
     * A panel discussion between Geoff Dyer (author of "Yoga For the
People Who Can't Bothered To Do It"), Garth Cartwright (author of
"Journey's With Gypsies") and Mark Pilkington (editor of Strange
Attractor Journal) on the nature and development of alternative cultures
and a live video link to Los Angeles with Brian Doherty (author of "This
Is Burning Man").
     * Pete Johnson describing the process and challenges involved in
creating Nowhere, Europe's regional burn based upon the principles of
Burning Man.
